The level of imitation that this product provides is second to none. This would be a (very rare) 10/10 rating if it weren’t for one thing: the price. At $7.29 for an 8oz jar, they have my metaphorical balls in a vice here. This is a product I absolutely cannot go without in my kitchen. I’m sure you will find it featured in plenty of the recipes I post on this site, but it pains my frugal little soul every time we have to replenish our stock of the stuff.
Expensive or not, this rich, umami, vegetarian bouillon has absolutely changed the way we cook. It brought so many traditionally non-vegetarian foods back into our lives that I never thought we’d be able to eat on a cruelty-free diet. For that reason alone, I will be eternally grateful to Better Than Bouillon for bringing this product into existence.
Better Than Bouillon’s No Beef Base come in 8oz glass jars containing approximately 3/4 cup of bouillon per jar. The bouillon is shelf stable prior to opening, but it must be refrigerated after opening.
We purchased this product from Better Than Bouillon’s website for $7.29/jar plus shipping. We have purchased this product on Amazon in the past, but found that sometimes the expiration dates on the products were unfavorable. I have yet to actually see this product stocked in a brick and mortar store.
Better Than Bouillon used to offer the product in 3.5oz and 8oz jars, with the 3.5oz version running about $4.00, and the 8oz version running at $7.29. Right now, they’re only offering 8oz jars on their website, so it’s unclear if they will continue to offer the 3.5oz jars.
Basic Stock Instruction
Dissolve 1 tsp (equal to 1 bouillon cube) No Beef Base in 8oz of boiling water. Use basic stock for soups, sauces, and gravies, or to cook vegetables, rice, or pasta with more flavor.
