REVIEW – Quorn – Meatless Roast

Nothing brings people together quite like a delicious meal. Now you can enjoy a meat-free version of this dinner centerpiece, perfect for a family dinner or the holidays.

First Thoughts

In the world of alternative meats, Quorn’s Meatless Roast is truly “alternative”. While Quorn’s new packaging shies away from the word “turkey”, it’s very obvious that’s exactly what they’re aiming to imitate. Quorn products can be pretty hit or miss, but their Meatless Roast quickly became a holiday staple for us. Putting aside our unwavering love for the product, there is lot to unpack about this imitation turkey roast.

What Is It?

Quorn is a U.K. based company that focuses on creating alternative meat products. What‘s unique about Quorn products is that they are all created with mycoprotein. Never heard of mycoprotein before? Yeah, I hadn’t either. if you’re curious, here is a guide we wrote about the history of Mycoprotein and Quorn products.

Quorn’s Meatless Roast can be found in the freezer section and come in 16oz logs, 1 log per package. Quorn’s Meatless Roast is packaged in an air tight plastic wrap. In the package it almost resembles an absurdly fat sausage. Based in their serving sizes, 1 roast should feed about 4 people. I’d say as long as you have some self control, that’s pretty accurate.

The cooking instructions on the package recommend roasting the Meatless Roast (SURPRISE!) . You can roast them either from frozen, or thawed. The odd things is that they recommend keeping the plastic wrap on the roast until after cooking. Just to experiment, I’ve cooked Quorn’s Meatless Roast both with and without the plastic wrap. The purpose of the plastic wraps seems to be to hold moisture inside the Meatless log. Unless you’re slow cooking it, or plan on marinating it, I’d recommend following their cooking instructions as written.

Quorn isn’t as popular in the U.S., but we have been able to purchase this product at both Walmart and Whole Foods. Whole Foods usually charges around 7.99, while Walmart charges $5.86.

Quorn has a totally unique approach to protein production. Their Meatless Roast is high in protein, high in fiber, low in saturated fat, and has no cholesterol. The real questions is how does it taste?

How Does Is Taste?

I can taste turkey. I swear to god, I can taste turkey, but the mycoprotein does add its own flavor as well. I think the flavor of the mycoprotein is a bit of an acquired taste. It’s not s strong flavor, but all of Quorn products seem to have it. Despite the off taste of the mycoprotein, the roast really does taste quite a bit like turkey.

The texture of Quorn is what is truly impressive, and keeps us coming back for more. The texture is exactly like roasted turkey. I repeat, the texture is EXACTLY like roasted turkey. It’s juicy and stringy and meaty in all the right ways. Whip up some mashed potatoes and stuffing and you’ve got the perfect thanksgiving dinner. The mycoprotein easily absorbs any flavoring you add to it as well,. If you want to try out a traditional turkey slice rub, go for it.

Final Thoughts

Quorn’s Meatless roast is a downright delightful vegetarian turkey alternative. Does it taste a little off? Yes. But it tastes enough like turkey that after a few bites, you hardly notice. The texture is incredibly impressive and makes me wonder what other types of protein alternatives have yet to be discovered.

Overall Rating: 8.5/10 – Pretty Tasty

Side note: Jon wanted me to rate this higher, but due to the prices and slightly off taste of the mycoprotein, I couldn’t. He said if it was cheaper, he would gladly eat it every single day, and I don’t think he’s joking.
