REVIEW – Sweet Earth Chipotle Seitan Strips

Seitan strips infused with smoky chipotle chilies and sauce. Perfect for salads or your favorite recipe.

First Thoughts

I picked Sweet Earth’s Chipotle Seitan Strips on a whim while shopping at Whole Foods on an empty stomach (mistake, I know). I’ve heard good things about the company Sweet Earth before, but had never tried any of their products. I had no plan for these seitan strips, and no expectations. I can’t pinpoint why, but something about them left me feeling uninspired. They sat in my freezer for two weeks before I decided to give them a try. On a positive note, they definitely leave me wondering what else Sweet Earth might have up their sleeve…

What Is It?

Sweet Earth is a California based company that focuses on plant based meat alternatives and gourmet pre-packaged vegetarian meals. Eco-friendly, sustainable practices are at the core of their company, but their real focus is creating truly delicious vegetarian meat alternatives. Here at Beats Your Meat that’s definitely something we can get behind. Sweet Earth… is this what love feels like?

Company aside, Sweet Earth’s Chipotle Seitan Strips can be found in the freezer section in 8oz packages running about $3.99. The serving size recommendation is two servings per package, which seems pretty accurate. 8oz isn’t a ton of seitan, but it’s fairly reasonable for the price. After opening the cardboard box, these pre-sauced pre-cooked seitan strips are vacuum sealed in a pretty thick plastic bag, sauce and all.

After purchasing, you can keep this product refrigerated or frozen. The cooking instructions on the package recommend thawing before cooking. To thaw quickly, I just ran the vacuum sealed seitan under hot water for a few minutes until the strips had thawed enough to cook. On the packaging, they provide cooking instruction for sautéing and microwaving. I tried my hand at sautéing them, since I’ve had some pretty terrible results microwaving other types of seitan in the past.

Right off the bat, theses Chipotle Seitan Strips were coated in significantly less sauce than I was expecting, but you could still smell the chipotle seasoning the second you cut open the bag. During cooking, the seitan strips seemed firm and did not crumble much as I abused them with my little plastic flipper. As I sautéd them, the outside managed to crisp up just a bit, but they seemed to cook pretty quickly and painlessly. At this point, the seitan smelled so good that I wasn’t worried about the taste. The texture was still a big question mark though.

How Does It Taste?

The sauce flavor is good, but a little bland. It almost feels like they were afraid of making the seitan too spicy. I have a pretty low tolerance for spicy foods, and I’d say the heat of these is very mild. Underneath the sauce, I was expecting that familiar wheat-y seitan flavor that so often permeates through these types of products. Surprisingly enough, these strips have no aftertaste whatsoever. You do get a slight hint of a delicious beefy flavor, but it’s not quite enough. I really just wanted more flavor in general in this product. It felt like a huge tease.

Let’s be real though… I’m going to leave open the possibility that maybe I’ve ruined MY tastebuds binge eating potato chips and donuts. Maybe Sweet Earth has actually perfectly seasoned these Chipotle Seitan Strips? Maybe?

On to the texture! The texture is decidedly meaty, but not too rubbery either. I get excited when seitan manages to achieve that stringy texture that many meats have, but this seitan really doesn’t have that. The seitan dried out a little bit while cooking, but wasn’t too dry. The texture in general is very middle of the road. It’s not great, but it by no means is bad either.

After trying them on their own, I threw together some quick and sloppy quesadillas. I have to say… this vegetarian steak REALLY shined in the quesadillas. The flavor didn’t over power the other ingredients, but instead helped marry everything together in delicious harmony. I was wrong Sweet Earth. I get it now. These aren’t meant to be the main event. They’re like the bouncy little host at a talent show that talks up each new act before they come on stage. Terrible metaphor aside, it blew my mind how well these worked in a meal. I’m downright excited to try them in a salad or burrito.

I love how easy it was to cook up these Seitan steak strips and throw together a meal. For those of us who are time poor, quick easy meals are a must have. Finding a product like this that is so versatile, tasty, and easy is an absolute delight. As I said, I think I realize now they really aren’t meant to be eaten on their own. They need to be mixed into something. That being said, the versatility of these couldn’t be beat. Burritos, sandwiches, soups, salads, and the list goes on.

Final Thoughts

These Sweet Earth Chipotle Seitan Strips feel like they are meant to be an addition to something else – not the main event. While I wish they were more flavorful, the flavor that I could taste was absolutely delicious. If you’re looking for a salad topping, burrito buddy, quesadilla filling – you’re in for a treat.

Final Rating: 7.5/10 – Pretty Tasty
