Review

While it wasn’t bad, this imitation mozzarella was not convincing enough for me to want to convert to veganism.

Jokes aside, the word that kept coming to mind was “unoffensive”. Daiya’s Mozzarella Style Shreds are unoffensive in every way. The taste and texture aren’t bad, but at the same time really don’t come close to the iconic marvel that is mozzarella cheese. In hindsight, pizza is a meal that relies VERY heavily on the flavor of mozzarella, so using this vegan cheese to make the abomination that is “pizza bread” was a mistake on our part. Daiya’s mild buttery flavor just really missed the mark for me all around.

That being said, the cheese was better than I anticipated, and I’m excited to try other Daiya products. These Mozzarella Style Shreds could be a great dairy-free substitute in all kinds of pasta dishes and other cheese covered goodies. Just don’t expect a 1:1 Mozzarella imitation.

Not yet, anyways.

THE GOOD

  • Tastes mildly cheesy
  • Melts into a nice creamy texture
  • Vegan
  •

THE BAD

  • Has an odd wheaty aftertaste
  • The raw texture is almost like stale playdough
  • Super oily
  • Tastes more like buttered toast than mozzarella

Final Rating: /10 - Meh.

Daiya reccomends using less of their cheese than you would a regular dairy cheese. Based on our experience, that’s probably sounds advice. The areas where we used too much cheese almost ended up a cream cheese consistency.
